The Opportunity Card
(Die Chancenkarte)
The Opportunity Card, known as Chancenkarte in German, is an excellent way for job seekers from outside the EU to enter Germany for employment. To obtain the card, you must be eligible for it, and you must demonstrate your ability to cover your costs of living for the duration of your stay in Germany.
Proving sufficient
financial means
You have three options:
Option one: Blocked Account
Opening a blocked account with 1,027 Euros available per month requires a total balance of 12,324 Euros for twelve months to apply for the Chancenkarte. Choosing this option involves reserving and spending thousands of Euros and uncertainty about when you will start earning in Germany.
Option two: Part-time Job
Securing a part-time job contract while still in your home country can demonstrate financial stability. This option provides an easier transition into the German job market. In addition, you don’t have to wait for several months to get a visa appointment, as you can get it within two weeks using the fast-track procedure. Choosing this option means you can start earning from the first day you arrive in Germany!
Option three: Formal obligation
If you have a close relative, such as a spouse, living in Germany who meets the requirements to provide a formal obligation, you can use this as proof of sufficient financial means. For example, a student with a student job would not qualify. This is a very affordable option for obtaining the Chancenkarte, but it is not available to everyone.

Eligibility for the Chancenkarte
To qualify for the German Chancenkarte, you need either a university degree or a vocational training qualification. University graduates typically meet the requirements more easily, while professionals with vocational training must accumulate six points through a point-based system. This system considers factors such as relevant work experience, language proficiency, and age. Extensive work experience and advanced German language skills can earn additional points, improving eligibility. Proficiency in German is particularly valued for workplace and societal integration.
